Rolex: Four Days of Eventing Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park

Birds begin to chirp as soft sunbeams grace the mist-covered grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park. Riders leave their rooms and silently ready themselves for the first of three rigorous days of competition. Nerves have yet to set-in, and all take advantage of the quiet, cool, stillness that envelops the barns of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.

As warm-ups begin, and competitors go through the motions, the realization begins to sink in;

Today, they have the opportunity to make history, and all they have to do is best the other 89 riders competing at Rolex.

Rolex Kentucky 3-Day event is the first of three horse trials that, when won by a rider in consecutive order, culminates in the achievement of the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing and the accompanying $350,000 prize. Pippa Funnell is the first, and only, rider to accomplish this feat and win the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing in it’s second year of existence in 2003.

The cross-country course opened to the public on Wednesday for walking and exploring, as the horses receive their first inspection before the show begins.

Thursday and Friday will be filled with Dressage tests as well as a myriad of demonstrations and exhibitions concluding with a 5k run (or 1 mile walk) to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

Saturday is entirely dedicated to cross country. Spectators are welcome to walk the course and watch as horse and rider give their all to continue on to the final day of competition. Now, this is a day you definitely don’t want to miss! As the horse show comes to a close for the day, Hunter Hayes will kickoff the evening festivities with a full concert!

Before the stadium jumping begins on Saturday, the horses will undergo a second inspection to ensure they are fit to compete. Once they pass, all that matters is power and speed as horse and rider attempt to complete their stadium rounds with all rails resting in their jump cups, and the clock flashing the fastest time of all.

Caracol will be located in Booth 76, as is highlighted on the map below!

We hope too see you this week and welcome everyone to join us for a fabulous weekend of eventing!
